The Power of Contentment-What If Jesus Is Already Enough?

The older I get, the more I realize how rare contentment really is.

We live in a world that constantly pushes us to chase the next thing — the next promotion, the next house, the next upgrade, the next achievement. And even when we finally get those things, the satisfaction fades surprisingly quickly.

Before long, we’re looking for something else.

But the Bible offers a very different path.

Recently on the podcast, I talked about something that is rare, powerful, and incredibly freeing: the power of contentment.

The Constant Chase

So many people today live in a constant cycle of pursuit.

The next title.
The next raise.
The next opportunity.
The next possession.

And there’s nothing inherently wrong with ambition. Hard work and growth are good things. In fact, I hope you are striving to grow in your faith, your influence, and your impact in the world.

But there’s a hidden danger.

When our motivation isn’t anchored in God’s presence, success never satisfies.

No matter how much we achieve, there’s always another level to chase. Another goal to reach. Another comparison to make.

That’s why a simple verse from Hebrews has become one of my favorite scriptures.

“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’”
— Hebrews 13:5

That promise changes everything.

God is saying something profound here:

You already have everything you truly need — because you have Me.

When the Focus Shifts

Over the years, I’ve watched many sincere Christians slowly drift away from that truth.

They started strong.
They served faithfully.
They were passionate about God.

But somewhere along the way, their focus shifted.

Instead of focusing on the Giver, they began focusing on the gifts.

Money and possessions themselves aren’t evil. But the love of them can quietly pull our hearts away from Jesus. When that happens, it’s easy to lose something much more valuable than wealth:

Peace.
Joy.
Purpose.
Even faith.

If we want to live as what I call 10X Christians—followers of Jesus who multiply what God has given them—our power source cannot be success or wealth.

It has to be something far more stable:

The unshakable presence of Jesus.

Remember the promise again:

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Whether you have a little or a lot, that promise means you are never missing anything essential.

A Question I Ask Myself Often

Sometimes during my quiet times I ask myself a simple question.

I’ll be sitting in my office, maybe on my prayer bench or quietly in my chair, reflecting on Scripture.

And I ask:

“What’s missing in my life right now?”

Every time I ask that question honestly, the answer is the same.

Nothing.

I have God.
I have salvation.
I have an eternal inheritance.
I’m a co-heir with Christ.

I have an amazing wife, Pam. We’ve been married 35 years.
I have incredible kids and a wonderful family.
I have a church I love and a mission that gives my life meaning.
I have great friends—including many of you who listen to the podcast.

When I step back and look honestly, I realize something powerful:

There’s nothing missing.

But if I’m not careful, part of my heart still whispers:

“I need more.”

That’s why asking this question regularly is such a great check on the heart.

The Secret to Contentment

Contentment doesn’t mean you stop growing.

It doesn’t mean you lose ambition.

It simply means remembering the true source of joy.

When we stop comparing ourselves to others…
When we stop striving for the wrong reasons…
When we anchor our lives in God’s presence…

Something amazing happens.

Peace returns.

Joy returns.

Purpose becomes clear again.

And we realize the truth that the world constantly tries to hide from us:

Jesus is enough.

Try This in Your Next Quiet Time

Here’s something simple you can try during your next devotional time.

Sit quietly for a moment and ask yourself:

“What’s missing in my life?”

Not what could be improved.

Not what you wish were different.

But what is truly missing?

If you’re walking with God, the answer may surprise you.

Because when Jesus is present in your life, nothing essential is missing.

That’s the mindset of a truly contented life.

And that’s the mindset of a 10X Christian.

Final Thought

True contentment doesn’t come from what you get.

It comes from who is with you.

And Jesus made a promise that still stands today:

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

Rest in that truth.
