How to Experience True Peace of Mind

Listen to the full Episode 335

When was the last time you experienced true peace of mind?

Not just happiness.
Not just relief that a stressful week ended.
But deep, steady peace — where nothing feels missing and nothing feels urgent.

That kind of peace is rare. It’s precious. And according to Jesus, it’s available.

Right before going to the cross, Jesus said something extraordinary:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” — John 14:27

Think about that moment. He knew suffering was ahead. He knew His disciples would face confusion, fear, and persecution. And what did He choose to give them?

Peace.

Not comfort.
Not wealth.
Not success.
Peace.

So the question becomes: How do we actually experience that peace of mind on a daily basis?

Let me share four keys.

1. Abstain from Sinful Desires

Peter writes:

“Abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.” — 1 Peter 2:11

There is nothing that destroys peace of mind faster than tolerated sin.

When you compromise — even a little — it creates internal tension. You may not feel it immediately, but it builds. Whether it’s media habits, anger, gossip, lust, pride, overconsumption of news, or something else entirely, sin wages war against your soul.

Peace grows in a clean heart.

I’m not talking about perfection. I’m talking about integrity. Deliberate abstinence. Refusing to negotiate with what you know pulls you away from God.

True peace of heart is found in resisting passions, not yielding to them.

2. Put Your Love Into Action

John writes:

“Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth… This is how we set our hearts at rest in His presence.” — 1 John 3:18–19

Did you catch that phrase?

Set our hearts at rest.

Serving others stabilizes your soul.

When Pam and I moved to Boston, several brothers showed up and helped us assemble furniture. It wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t dramatic. But it was deeply meaningful. Their action set our hearts at rest.

If you want peace of mind, wake up each day determined to serve someone.

Encourage someone.
Help someone.
Call someone.
Carry something.
Give something.

Love in action anchors your heart in God’s presence.

3. Remember God Is Greater Than Your Feelings

Our emotions can be loud.

Self-criticism.
Old narratives.
Negative self-talk.
Inherited fears.

John reminds us:

“If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and He knows everything.” — 1 John 3:20

Your feelings are powerful — but they are not ultimate.

God is greater than your anxiety.
Greater than your insecurity.
Greater than your self-judgment.

Take time daily to sit quietly and remind yourself of who God is. When a thought pops up, ask:

Is this from God?
Or is this just noise?

Peace grows when truth gets louder than emotion.

4. Actively Pursue Peace

Paul tells Timothy:

“Pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace.” — 2 Timothy 2:22

Peace isn’t passive. It’s pursued.

We chase careers.
We chase financial security.
We chase freedom.

But do we chase peace?

There’s a difference between freedom to do anything you want and freedom from internal chaos. What Jesus offers is freedom from:

Reaction
Compulsion
Anger
Fear
Restlessness

Peace of mind is freedom from.

And it’s available whether you have a dollar in your pocket or a billion.

Peace Is Independent of Circumstances

Happiness often depends on what you have, who you’re with, and where you’re going.

Peace does not.

Peace is available in:

Singleness
Marriage
Abundance
Scarcity
Health
Illness
Boston winters
Hawaiian beaches

(Although I’ll admit, Waimanalo Beach does feel like heaven.)

Jesus’ peace transcends location.

A Simple Daily Prayer

Try this tomorrow morning:

Father, help me to please You with my thoughts, my words, and my actions — not out of guilt, but out of love.

Start small.

Five minutes of obedience.
One clean decision.
One loving action.

Peace grows progressively.

Final Thought

If Jesus considered peace so valuable that He gave it as a final gift before the cross, maybe we should treat it as valuable too.

Don’t just think about peace.

Pursue it.
Protect it.
Guard it.

And receive it.

Because my goal — and the reason I started this podcast back in 2020 — is to inspire you to live a no-regrets life, make this life count, and multiply disciples, leaders, and churches.

And you can’t multiply anything effectively without peace.
