Live for Jesus, Not Your Legacy | The Mission That Truly Matters

One of the most uncomfortable feelings in life is being overlooked.

Maybe you’ve experienced it at church. The preacher thanks several people who served in a ministry, but your name isn’t mentioned—even though you were there the whole time working alongside them.

Or maybe it happens at work. Your boss highlights the contribution of a coworker, and you realize that person leaned heavily on you to get the job done. Yet somehow you’re left out of the recognition.

Even at home it can happen. You do something helpful around the house, and no one seems to notice.

Part of you knows you shouldn’t care about recognition. But if we’re honest, most of us still feel that little voice inside saying:

“What about me?”

Recently on the podcast, I talked about something that challenges that instinct deeply.

A Radical Quote That Changes Your Perspective

There’s a quote I keep in a stack of what I call my power-packed scripture and quote cards.

It comes from Count Nicholas von Zinzendorf, the founder of the Moravian movement in the 1700s—one of the most evangelistic movements in church history.

He said this:

“Preach the gospel, die, and be forgotten.”

At first glance, that statement sounds harsh.

But it’s actually incredibly freeing.

Zinzendorf wasn’t saying our lives don’t matter. He was saying something far more important:

It’s not about us. It’s about the mission.

Make Jesus famous—not yourself.

The Apostle Paul Lived This Way

When you look at the life of the apostle Paul, you see the exact same mindset.

In Acts 20:22–24, Paul describes his life with striking clarity. He knows suffering awaits him. He knows hardship is coming. Yet he says something remarkable:

“I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me.”

Think about that.

Paul wasn’t chasing comfort.
He wasn’t chasing recognition.
He wasn’t trying to build his personal brand.

His focus was simple:

Finish the work Jesus gave him to do.

His purpose was bigger than his personal comfort.

The message mattered more than the recognition.

When the Mission Becomes the Focus

When we live for our own name, our impact ends when we do.

But when we live for Jesus’ name, something amazing happens:

Our influence multiplies long after we’re gone.

Ironically, Paul is remembered everywhere today—not because he tried to be remembered, but because he was completely focused on Jesus.

If you read Paul’s writings, you notice something immediately. He talks about Jesus and grace constantly.

Jesus is the center of everything.

When You Feel Forgotten

I remember experiencing this feeling when Pam and I moved to Japan as missionaries.

We lived there for ten years.

At times I felt like I had completely disappeared off the map. I had grown up spiritually in a large campus ministry in the San Francisco Bay Area where everyone knew each other. Then suddenly I was thousands of miles away.

Sometimes I wondered:

Does anyone even remember I’m here?

If you’re a missionary overseas right now, you probably know exactly what I’m talking about.

You’re in Croatia.
Or Romania.
Or Moldova.
Or somewhere in Asia.

And occasionally the thought crosses your mind:

Does anyone even remember I’m here serving?

That feeling is incredibly human.

Our sinful nature hates being forgotten.

But the mindset of a true disciple is different.

The Mindset of a 10X Christian

A 10X Christian pours their life out for Jesus—not to be remembered, but to finish the mission.

They give back to Jesus ten times what He gave them.

Not because they want applause.

But because the mission matters.

When you step back and think about it, that’s the most freeing way to live.

You don’t have to chase recognition.

You don’t have to build a legacy around your own name.

Your job is simply to be faithful to the mission Jesus gave you.

The Question We All Have to Answer

So here’s the challenge I want to leave you with today.

What are you living for?

Are you living for comfort or calling?

Are you living for recognition or obedience?

God is looking for men and women with a simple aim:

Bring as many people to Jesus as possible.

You may not be a preacher.

You may not be a missionary.

But you are a messenger.

Every conversation matters.

Every act of kindness matters.

Every invitation to church matters.

Every time you share your faith, it matters in eternity.

Finish the Race

Don’t just study the mission.

Live it.

Preach the gospel.

Finish the race.

And when your time comes, leave behind something far more powerful than fame.

A legacy of faith.
