What you focus on is who you become.
Let me ask you a question.
If someone followed you around for the last seven days…
and watched everything you watched…
listened to everything you listened to…
and saw everything you focused on…
Who would they conclude you are becoming?
Because here’s the truth:
You are becoming whatever you look at the most.
Your attention is shaping your future more than you realize.
And the Bible gives us a powerful command that can change the direction of our lives:
“Fix your eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
— Hebrews 12:2
Your Life Follows Your Focus
A friend of mine named Gabe Santos learned fluent English in an unusual way.
He didn’t take classes.
He didn’t hire a tutor.
He watched Transformers and GI Joe cartoons every day.
He listened.
He copied the sounds.
He absorbed the language.
Before long he spoke English with no accent at all.
Why?
Because what you focus on shapes you.
Wherever You Look… That’s Where You Go
When I was a kid, my dad let me drive his truck across the Eastern Oregon desert.
Before we started, he told me something I never forgot:
“Look way down the road. Because wherever you look… that’s where the truck will go.”
He was right.
Your body follows your eyes.
And in life, your life follows your focus.
Character Matters More Than Success
Many people spend their life asking:
• What job will I have?
• How much money will I make?
• Where will I live?
But the deeper question is:
Who are you becoming?
Think about the people we admire most.
Jesus.
Paul.
Great leaders throughout history.
We don’t admire them because of their possessions.
We admire them because of their character.
Character determines:
• Who trusts you
• Who follows you
• Who you attract
• Who you marry
And it’s the only thing that:
• goes everywhere with you
• survives every circumstance
• and follows you into eternity.
Why Focus on Jesus?
Because no one else has His character.
Jesus is:
• perfectly loving
• perfectly courageous
• perfectly pure
• perfectly faithful
And He doesn’t just teach truth.
He transforms people.
This is the heart of discipleship.
Jesus didn’t say:
“Study me.”
He said:
“Follow me.”
Fix Your Eyes on Jesus
Hebrews 12:1–2 tells us exactly how transformation happens.
“Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus…”
That phrase is powerful.
Fix your eyes.
Attention is not automatic.
It’s intentional.
Race Horses Wear Blinders
Race horses wear blinders.
Why?
Because if they look sideways at other horses…
They lose focus.
They lose speed.
They lose the race.
So the blinders keep their eyes straight down the track.
The Christian life works the same way.
You must decide:
Jesus is my focus.
Not:
• culture
• approval
• pleasure
• fear
Jesus.
The Social Media Algorithm of Life
You already understand algorithms.
Whatever you watch on social media…
You get more of it.
Watch drama?
More drama.
Watch conflict?
More conflict.
Watch sexual content?
More sexual content.
Life works the same way.
Whatever you focus on… you become.
The Transformation
But when you focus on Jesus…
Something powerful happens.
“We all… contemplate the Lord’s glory… and are being transformed into his image.”
— 2 Corinthians 3:18
The Spirit begins forming:
• love
• joy
• peace
• patience
• kindness
• goodness
• faithfulness
• gentleness
• self-control
The character of Christ grows inside you.
The Sculptor
Michelangelo was asked how he created the statue of David.
He said:
“I simply chipped away everything that wasn’t David.”
That’s what Jesus does in our lives.
When we focus on Him…
He chips away:
• pride
• selfishness
• fear
• sin
Until Christ appears in us.
The Final Question
One day every one of us will lie on our deathbed.
Your phone will be silent.
Your career will be finished.
Your bank account will mean nothing.
And the only question that will matter is:
Did I follow Jesus?
Did I fix my eyes on Him?
Did I become the person He called me to be?
Final Challenge
Stop looking sideways.
Stop looking at culture.
Stop looking at fear.
Fix your eyes on Jesus.
Because the greatest life you can live
is a life that never took its eyes off Christ.
